The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has suspended their planned industrial action which was to take effect from midnight.
Speaking today in Nairobi, Collins Oyuu, KNUT Secretary General said the conclusion to call off the strike was guided by the progress by Teachers Service Commission (TSC) in addressing the union’s major demands which include commencement of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) 2025/2029 cycle.
“The NEC has therefore, today August 25, 2024, agreed to withdraw the strike action notice which was elapsing midnight August 25, 2024, since we have commenced addressing the remaining matters administratively. In light of the latest developments, we direct our teachers to resume duty effective Monday, August 26, 2024,” Oyuu said.
The secretary general noted that the Commission has already promoted 51, 232 teachers through competitive interviews and the process is ongoing. In addition, the Commission asserted teachers will continue accessing both private and public for services through their medical scheme.
He urged teachers to report to their work station, adding that the union would re-activate the strike notice if TSC fails to address all their issues. “Meanwhile we assure our members that the union is committed to resolve the matters herewith failure to which we shall revert to the initial position since the strike notice has only been withdrawn,” KNUT said
However, Oyuu said the union shall revert to the initial position if the teacher’s employer fails to address all their concerns.
In a twist of events, Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has maintained that their strike is still on from midnight and that no teacher should report to work.
